Nerve Conduction Study

Can you tell me if a Nerve Conduction Study is helpful in diagnosing MS?

I had an onset of sensory symptoms and severe episodic vertigo 15 months ago that lasted about 3 months.  Some of my symptoms never went away just became mild.  I have had 2 more episodes with the last episode I have numbness and loss of vibration sensation in my right foot for a couple of months.  The numbness is subsiding and the vibration sensation is coming back.

I had a NCS done about 20 yrs ago that was abnormal but I never followed up on it.  We are now repeating the test due to the numbness, muscle twitching and spasms.  I have had 1 MRI w/o contrast.  3 very small non specific "white spots"  were found between the grey and white matter.

Hi, nerve conduction study is of not much value for diagnosis of MS. “Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of the brain and spine is often used during the diagnostic process. MRI shows areas of demyelination (lesions) as bright spots on the image. Gadolinium can be administered intravenously to highlight active plaques and, by elimination, demonstrate the existence of historical lesions not associated with clinical symptoms. This can provide the evidence of chronic disease needed for a definitive diagnosis of MS.

Testing of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can provide evidence of chronic inflammation of the central nervous system. The CSF is tested for oligoclonal bands, which are immunoglobulins found in 75% to 85% of people with definite MS (but also found in people with other diseases).[11] Combined with MRI and clinical data, the presence of oligoclonal bands can help make a definite diagnosis of MS. Lumbar puncture is the procedure used to collect a sample of CSF”. Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sclerosis
