Nerve Regeneration in lips

by margaret, Oct 09, 2000 12:00AM
My 22 year old son was in an accident 6 weeks ago where he sustained nerve damage to his upper lip. It was severed in 2 places. Is there any technology to help restore feeling and get his smile back?
Thank-you

Dear Margaret:

Sorry to hear about your son's accident.  Yes, a surgeon can surgically bring the severed nerve ending in close proximity and see if they will regenerate.  If this was not already done, then hopefully there will be enough regeneration of the nerve to make reconnections to the lip muscles.  Peripheral nerves can regenerate somewhat, and hopefully your son's will do this.  The nerve will regrow at a rate of approximately 1 inch per month, so one can predict about when the recovery should begin.  This is not an exact science and alot depends on the injury.  Ask your son's neurosurgeon and get his/her opinion.  I hope your son's lip fully recovers.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
