Nerve damage after iliac stents placed

by rmdwink, Jul 05, 2009 01:50PM
10/30/2008--Patient had bilateral iliac stents placed to increase blood flow to legs.  Blood flow was increased.  10/30/200--while in hospital recovery--patient complained of 1) lower back pain 2) pain in femoral area of right leg 3) numbness down right leg.  All three symptoms were new and did not exist prior to surgery.  Prior to surgery patient walked 1.5 miles per day, push-tilled large yard every spring, did yoga, and took no medications.  At this writing, 7/4/2009, patient cannot walk to end of 100ft driveway, experiences pain 15 on a 1-10 scale in the lower back and femoral nerve area of right leg, has numbness in right leg to the point of it going out while standing, and takes pain medication regularly.  Pain is constant, does not lessen when lying or walking.  Numbness is more profound when standing.   Neurontin and Gabapentin have been prescribed and do not help/ give bad side effects.  Hydrocodone provides minimal relief.

Surgery records detail doctor unable to place stents from right side due to calcification.  Both stents reported to be placed from Left side.  Mass bruising on right side--effectively looked like patient was wearing dark purple/red boy-shorts on right side--accs front and back of right side.  Reasonable bruising on left side.

Question:  What type of nerve damage could have occurred due to this surgery and how do we correct the damage?

Quest:  To remove the constant pain, return mobility, and not require any pain medications
