Neurological mystery

by scottas90, Aug 12, 2004 12:00AM
I am seeking help for my girlfriend -she is 32. She has  migraine headaches and neurological episodes. She has been dealing with daily headaches and neurofollowing a “blackout” in '01 while she was at work as an ER nurse down in Illinois. She has daily headaches, ranging from 1-2/10-7-8/10.As for the neuro, it started with weakness in her hands. It progressed to her arms and my legs. She noticed around her eyes and mouth. Her hands and arms would twitch like an intention remor. Strobe/ pulsating lights seem to trigger an “episodes”, as they are now being called causing her to lose her specch and experience seizure like twitches in all her extremitites depending on the severity of the episode. She also has been getting problems with her legs, where they get extremely weak and it feels like they aren’t connected with her brain. In July 2003,a MRI (w/out contrast) showed a 2mm lesion in the right midbrain. The doctors do not think this is of any significance and will only be monitoring it.The Gadolinium unfortunatley puts her into an episode. There was an ultrasound done on her Thyroid. The results showed several calcified nodules. She has no diagnosis. She is thinking MS or Hashimoto’s.She is going to have a MRI 8/17.She wants it w/contst even though it may put her into an episode -last timeled to a week long hospital stay on the neurology floor.Have you ever heard of similar complications with the Gadolinium?suggestions? If the Gadolinium causes her to go into an episode, the seizure like twitching will make it hard to get a clear picture for the MRI. Any thoughts how to get a good MRI?

I am not aware of gadolinium causing a reaction like this. Perhaps a second opinion at a academic medical center would be reasonable. They can review the history and testing and make further recommendations. St. Louis and Chicago have very good medical centers you could visit. Good luck.
