Neurology and the Thyroid

I had my thyroid removed a year ago via radioactive iodine.  My Dr draws Free T3and T4 levels every few months, and Im still having to get my synthroid adjusted once in a while. A BMP  shows my calcium and sodium are low. With supplments I was able to fix that. Is it normal to have my thyroid level still falling after a year? I would have thought that the Thyroid would be dryed up by now. Recently I have been having the shakes and these weird jerks and what I believe are ticks in my face. My weight has gone up 25 pounds in the last year. Now my Dr want to send me to a neurologist. Could all this be from my thyoid?  Thank you for your time

Thanks for using the forum. I am happy to address your questions, and my answer will be based on the information you provided here. Please make sure you recognize that this forum is for educational purposes only, and it does not substitute for a formal office visit with your doctor.

Without the ability to obtain a history from you and examine you, I can not comment on a formal diagnosis or treatment plan for your symptom. However, I will try to provide you with some information regarding this matter.

I am not sure if seeing a neurologist is what you need. You probably should see an endocrinologist. A complication of removing the thyroid is disruption/removal of the parathyroids. This can lead to calcium fluctuations (particularly low calcium), which can cause twitching of the face and other body areas.

Thank you for using the forum, I hope you find this information useful, good luck.
