: I am currently being treated by a rheumatologist and a neurologist for my symtoms (symptoms), which are mostly sensory.  At this point I don't know exactly what type of disorder I have.  I read recent information on MS that talks about more of the nerve being damaged than previously thought (axons, etc.).  The information also mentions anti-inflammatory therapies.  If I am being treated with anti-inflammatories for a rheumatic condition, would this be of benefit in preventing any ms-type problems that might be present?
Also, I have read a lot about the drug progress over the last couple of years.  What is your opinion on how close we are to a cure, or at least a major breakthrough in preventing disability?
  Thanks for your input.  Char

Thanks for the question Char. The field of MS seems to be moving rapidly these days. The newest findings you are talking about were discovered recently at the Cleveland Clinic. How this will affect the treatment of MS at this time is unknown. We actually have a symposia going on today and tomorrow regarding these types of questions. There can be alot of overlap between MS and rheumatologic complaints especially when the symptoms are mostly sensory. In terms of anti-inflammatory medications I think it depends on the type. I'm not sure that non-steroidal anti-inflamm (ie motrin, lodine etc.) would give any specific benefit. Other types of immune regulating medications, however, may give a benefit (we already use cytoxan to treat some forms of MS). I think it is an exciting time in ************** and we all hope the answers are not too far away. Good luck
