Numbness, tingling Rt side of body

I am a 62 yr old female who experienced a brief episode of numbness and tingling around Rt. nostril and upper lip one year ago. It occurred during a stress situation.   Since that time, the episodes begin in the same area and spread to the entire Rt side of my body, including  half of my tongue and half of my throat. I experience numbness, tingling, heat and and ache in affected areas.  There is NO motor involvement, my vision is fine and I can continue on with normal activities.  However it is very disconcerting...It is triggered by the gag reflex (while brushing my teeth) and during sex (either during arrousal or after orgasm). Otherwise it occurs randomly and lasts 5-10 minutes with no residual except an occasional ache in my Rt temple.  It does not occur with anxiety or stress and taking Xanax has not prevented an episode during sex.  I take medication for hypertension (Accupril, HCTZ, K and Inderal LA 160 mg for arrythmias )  Also, Vit C, B complex, Mag, Fish oil, Flaxseed, Calcium  and HRT's.   I am otherwise very healthy, could lose 20 Lbs and exercise regularly (it occurs randomly during walking, using wts).    I have had an MRI and carotid studies and Stress and ECHO last Oct, all totally normal.  The neurologist basically had no idea what it was...I am searching for another neurologist as the frequency of these seem to be increasing.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have been on the internet all day trying to help my 43 year old sister out. She has extreem burning from her insides out and it feels like she is being attacked with a million pins and needles. It's attacking her entire body, including her eyes, nose, throat, etc. The doctor says she has Peripheral Neuropathy. She was diagnosed with Myasthesia Gravis about five years ago. Could these two problems be related? Is it possible to just wake up one day and have Peripheral Neuropathy? About six months ago she lost her sence of taste. Seems like most people have symtoms starting in one spot on their body, not the entire body. Her Neurology doctor is absolutely no help. He doesn't know what she has so he's brushed her off to her physician. Her physician is determined to get to the bottem of this problem. Has anyone in here ever experienced this pain on their entire body? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I want her to go to see an acupuncture specialist. I think these medications out there make things worse.

Respectfully,

Hey Yes I went and seen a neurologists and all of my ct scan and mri came back normal.  I still have the weekness, numbness and tingling in my right side.  Since all of this has happened i have lost 18 1/2 lbs.  I am still staying tired and loss pf appetite.  The 1st set of blood test showed my white blood count high and my neurophils high but was not extremely high. Any more suggestions on any other type of tests that i could possibly ask for?  Thanks

Thanks for responding to my question. No i have not had a spinal tap done, they have only done a MRI of my head to make sure i didn't have a stroke.  My primary care DR. is sending me to Nashville to an excellent neurologist.  Did you stay tired all the time and have no appetite?  Did it only affect your right side?  I have had several people tell me it sounded like cerabel palsy(not sure if that is exactly how to spell it) but the night before my right side felt like it was burning on the inside of my body and then last night it felt like someone was sticking needles all down my right side and even my right ear went numb.  Also did you lose grip and strength in your hand and leg? I have 2 kids to raise and both are in football and it is something every night and sometimes i just don't think i have the energy to go on one more day.

Hello
I have a stress anxiety disorder and also been diagnosed with gallbladder disease (awaiting surgery). Last Saturday I had a nap and I dreamed that a dog was biting my head. When I awoke, my head (Above the temple right side) was paining and my arms jolted for a few seconds (like a seizure). The right side of my face was tingling. Everyday since then I have had right side facial numbness. I have also been under a lot of stress. I thought a stroke was coming on and so I went to emerg with the facial numbness and the story of my dream. They did a EKG, blood work and a CT scan all proving nothing wrong. I was referred to a neurologist, but my sister told me they won't do anything for me. (She has epilepsy). Is stress causing these symptoms or am I in need of medical attention?

You described pretty much every single thing I am experiencing.  Do you have vission problems? The Neurologist first thought and diagnosed me of having a mini stroke.  Did you have a spinal tap done? (where the take spinal fluid) An MRI?  They did with me,  Have you had your blood looked at? To see what your white blood count is? And is there protein or high protein in your blood?  I had these tests done. Have your Muscles and Nerves and cervical Spine looked at through an MRI. And I was diagnosed with something.  I don't want to say, because I don't want to scare you, because there are not two people alike in this world.  We all have different body make up.  One of my co worker was trying to dianose me, and she was way off base, just because she had similar symptoms.  So, I won't pretend to be a doctor, but my advice to you, is you really need to see a Neurologist, and do not play around get your primary care Doctor to give you a good Doctor that has a good recommendation and go.  I hope everything works out.  I will be thinking of you, and tell me what the Neurologist says, and if by chance it is what I have, I will be here to give you support.

I saw a different neurologist on Friday and after hearing my symptoms, he immediately said I have sensory seizures.      He said I fit all the symptoms and he would review my previous EEG altho he suspected it was Ok.   I started on medication and we will evaluate how I am doing in 2 wks.  Hopefully, he is right and this can be resolved.

I recently had an allergic reaction to where my face, neck, ears and tongue started swelling, 2 days later i had an episode to where my right side of my body became numb (right arm,leg and face).  That has been 2 weeks ago, I still have the effects.  I have no strength in my right hand and it tingles and goes numb and do does my leg.  My leg also feels like it is cramping all the time and the right side of my head has been hurting for 3 weeks.  I was put in the hospital to have test run and a MRI and they ruled out a stroke. They are thinking that it might be stress or a migraine but I am not having the symptoms of a migraine. Everyone else keeps on telling me that they think I am having mini strokes because of the symptoms I am having.  Any suggestions on what you think it could be?

Numbness that involves exactly half the body/tongue/throat etc is unusual and only occurs from a neurological point to view in disease of the thalamus (usually from hardening of the arteries/stroke). Have your doctors asses your risk factors for stroke and what you can do to decrease your stroke risks, for example avoiding tobacco, lowering cholesterol, losing weight, exercise. The other usual cause for a 'half-body' sensory symptom is stress

Rarely focal seizures can 'march' from one area to another, but this would be unusual to involve so widespread a region without other symptoms. An EEG might be useful to evaluate for this.

Sensory symptoms triggered by swallowing, gag reflex etc cna be due to glossopharyngeal neuralgia - irritation of the nerve supplying sensation to the throat and back of the mouth, also part of the vasovagal reflex (and can cause faints). Treatment is with medications to reduce nerve irritibility like carbamazepine.

I cannot give you a clinical diagnosis over the internet, so you will need to followup with your doctors to dicuss these possibilities

Good luck
