Numbness and Tingling

Hi- I'm not sure which topic this falls under. I have been experiencing tingling in my left thigh for several months. The tingling can be intense at times. Last week I noticed the top of my thigh is numb. Like numbness after a tooth is pulled from the novicaine. The tingling occurs white standing, sitting or laying down. I had a tiny bit of tingling in the tips of my fingers but not very often. Any ideas? Thank you so much! Amanda

Thanks for the email. Numbness only in the thigh can be from multiple causes but usually is related to some irritation of nerves from the lumbar spine area. There is a condition call meralgia paresthetica in which the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve  (sensory nerve that has already left the spine) gets irritated as it crosses the inguinal ligament. This usually results in numbness mostly in the lateral upper thigh area. It can be related to restrictive clothing or tight belts and obesity. The exam is usually very characteristic. You should see a neurologist and if appears that something else is going on then you may require an imaging study of your spine. Best of luck. GS

it may be from bad podture, or it may be a neurological problem,. I'd see a neurologist---if you go through testing and all is negative, it may just be something simple like poor posture, which can compress nerves

since the end of june i've been experiencing a tingling sensation on the right side of my body. it started in both my legs, and within a 1/2 hr spread to my right arm (hand and below the elbow) and then to my face (from the right ear down the jawline to my mouth). On occasion my lips would tingle. Since then, these symptoms come and go. One day it's noticable and VERY annoying, the next day it's barely there. On top of that, for the past few weeks i've been having bad back aches and neck aches, which are very unusual for me.

I've been to the neurologist who said he doens't think it's a tumor or MS. However, he ordered a lot of test to be done...MRI, EMG, and extensive blood work. Haven't gotten the results back yet, but i'm worried. It's odd that this happening mostly on the right side of my body and in my two legs.

Hello, I have had problems since Dec. whe I moved.
I was finally diagnosed with Thyroiditis and Adrenal insuf.
However I am still having problems with numbess in my hands, pain in right leg numbness knee down (right leg) I had 2 MRI done and the first was bulging disc on lumbar and mild compression on sac. 2nd MRI showed no bulging dis or compression but now Facet joint disease and Disc degeneration from L3 to L5, the orthapedic group just wants me to keep doing theropy and come in for a cortizone shot, i already had my 3 epidurals with no releif. I can only walk for 15 minutes and i am in severe pain. Would this cause all the numb feelings and pain, I also get pain in the back of the neck everyday. The MRI of my C spine show a tiny bit of disc degeneration C5 which the said all them things are normal for my age (35) I am on Neurotin for nerve pain but it seems like I am having neuropathy issues now like my nerves move in different parts of my body all the time now, at night the leg gets nerve movements alot, and some in my arms. My feet keep feeling numb alot now also.

For the past month I have had numbness in my chin and left side of my face.  I have also have numbness in hands, mainly in my pinky though.  At first I thought it was an anxiety attack, but now I think it's more.  I believe the numbness made me have the anxiety attack, rather then the numbness being from the attack.  The attacks have stopped, but the numbness keeps getting worse.  I went to the doctors twice and the hospital once, and instead of attempting to figure out what it is they basically laughed at me because I'm only eighteen.  Could they be right, am I just losing it?  Is it possible it could be more?
Someone please Email me with some input?

Thank you.

It could be strss and or anxiety ! No you are not loosing it!  I'm not a doctor but its probably stress. I suffer anxiety and get tingles all the time. Like pins n needles. If you are that worried go to a neurologist for  some test like bell palsy (sp) It could just be poor blood cirulation . Don't wear really tight clothing or jewerly Talk with your doctor about your concern or a parent or gauradin school nurse someone who can be pro active for you and help you adress your concerns with a docter or neurologist.  If all else fails see a counsler maybe its anxiety

Hi~for several years now I have been experiencing head pains (not really headaches) more like a thrusting pain at certain parts of my head. I have not gone in for tests for fear of what they will tell me or find.  After having my daughter, 4 months ago, I started feeling numbness and tingling in my hands and arms. I thought perhaps this was the result of poor circulation because my daughter was sleeping on my arm but she is now in a crib and I am still experiencing it.  From time to time, i do sleep with my arm(s) under a pillow but I am not sure if this is the reason I am experiencing the tingle/numbness or if the head pains are related to it. I know ultimately I need to go in for tests but I am so afraid : ( My mom says that since I have had the head pains for some time now that its probably nothing serious or we would have known by now but I am not certain that is any type of logic. Any thoughts?

Hi, for several months now I too have been suffering from a burning, tingling sensation in my right thigh. The pain, and I call it pain as it has reduced me to tears in the past, occurs mainly during the night when in bed and occasionally when sitting watching TV at night. I also have a burning, numbing feeling in my hands and arms and although this is uncomfortable it is not as painful as in my leg. I cannot lie on my right side during the night as the pain is so intense. I have Type 2 Diabetes which is under control, am overweight and waiting for gastric bypass surgery. Any ideas what could be causing this...............regards.

It might be a neuropathy called Meralgia Paresthetica.  It is caused by the entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and is characterized by numbness, tingling, and a burning pain in the outer part of your thigh.  I actually suffer from this in my right thigh and have tried several things to fix it, but nothing has worked.  I also get shocking pains in the top of my right leg where the neuropathy is that feels like a TENS unit is attached.

Your symptoms sound just like mine, I also get very a very painful, burning sensation on my right hip if, during the night I roll over onto that side. I have actually gor out of bed and put the light on as I feel as though I have bedsores. Do you have any particular time when your symptoms occur?

I am 27 years old, working in Software Industry and put up at Bangalore/India.4 months back I had numbness and Tingling sensation on left thigh in an anterior patchy area.
In early days it was at a pick and after 20-25 days it decreased but still it persists but occurs when I stand in one place. Besides this I started having Tingling sensation in the palm and sole of my four limbs and bit above the palm and soles when I sit with folded legs or lie down with my hands support. Also started having weakness and stiffness in my fingers in all my four limbs. I felt heaviness on my back head with a bit hazy vision towards the end of the day. Also lot of fatigue was persisting. I had pain on my shoulders if I used to hold mobile for longer period. I was able carry out my daily activities but with hesitancy.

I visited the NIMHANS 3 months back, they tested reflexes of the all the four limbs it was found normal, all the sensations were also intact too. At the first instant when I visited the screening department they suspected Peripheral Neuropathy, but when visited outdoor they came up with a conclusion revoking the case of Peripheral Neuropathy and prescribed multivitamins.

But after a week it worsened so I visited another Doctor in HOSMAT hospital,
They did MRI (brain, back, neck) and nerve conduction test too. Everything was found normal.
They prescribed me NERVIGEN (3 months) & TEGRITAL (taking daily).Iam continuing to take those past from 1.5 month and I feel around 40 % reliefs from that.

But still some time I feel such a weakness in my fingers that I don’t feel like carrying something towards the end of the day. Tingling sensation in my four limbs still persists but less percentage.

Would you please help me in this regard with your Diagnosis’s and the approach to the right diagnosis?  Or shall I continue to take same tablets for some more days (up to 3 months)

Thanks in advance for all your patience to take a heed to this message.

I have a vibrating feeling in my right hip. It is almost as if I have the vibrate on my cell phone. In fact I first noticed it as I reached into my pocket for my phone but there was no phone. I feel it during the day as I sit at work and at night as I lay down on the sofa. It is not a steady vibration but one that  has interals.  the same like will have other problems if I stand for a long time. The front of the thigh will go num. I also have fell hard on the hip sking 7 years ago. so sitting all day has caused me more problems the past few years.

I am 65 and have been experiencing strange sensations in my lower extremities for approx. 10 years maybe more and they used to seem to be related to emotional situations. The best way I can describe them is to say they used to feel like a rippling up and down my lower legs. I would notice them because they were so annoying and came when I had a strong feeling and  I don't mean some really obvious anxiety, happiness or trauma....I mean just having some really good feeling inside realted to nothing very important. (Exp.: talking to someone about something sentimental). I've had nerve conduction tests in my lower legs and they were normal. In the past two or three years the condition has gotten worse and now I have many more sensations such as burning and most recently itching. It now invvolves the entire legs and on occasion I notice that my fingers feel slightly different and the itching is spreading. Today I had pantyhose on and thught I would loose my mind and was surprised to find some relief just by taking them off. In the last week there has been a slight tingling and nerve twitching around my left eye. I have littl hope after reading this web site that a diagnosis can happen or that treatment can be found. I am a pretty healthy person, exercise 3 xs a week and go to Yoga once per week. I am always busy...I am painting my bedroom and have been able to do that without too much trouble, but these sensations are so bothersome and getting worse. I fear that it is a progressive meuro disease and I am worried. What do you suggest.

I am a female in my late twenties and in good general health.

I was upset one evening about certain issues in my life and was crying.  Soon after that I started to experience tingling throughout my body.  It is about a month later and the tingling has subsided but it still occurs.  I have been taking fish oils everyday for a month now and just started yoga.  Please advice on what kind of treatment there is available to stop this tingling sensation.

Thank you,
Smiles
