Numbness in the hands has many possible causes one of which is carpal tunnel
syndrome. This is a disorder in which the median nerve is trapped in a fibrous
sheath as it crosses at the wrist. The symptoms are often worsened with driving,
reading a book, and doing activities with the arms elevated. Patients often
report awakening at night with tingling. If left untreated muscle weakness
can ensure. It is diagnosed with an EMG (electromyogram test). You should ask
for a referal to a neurologist. A pinched nerve can also cause similar problems
and can also be diagnosed with the same test. The Cleveland Clinic has a
World renowned EMG lab. If you would like to see a neurologist at the clinic
you should speak to your doctor regarding a consultation. Treatment may involve
splints, steroid injections, or surgery. Other conditions can also mask as
carpal tunnel and need to be excluded.
