Nuropathy pain

I need help for a friend. He has been to a number of pain specialists in Detroit and no one can find an answer to what is causing the pain.
Around 2 months ago, he started having pain behind his knee. That doctor used the word palsey. It has progressed down his leg into his big toe. It is more painful at night to the point he is on morphine at night along with percs during the day. He is 55 years old, with no major health issues, He tested positive for the first Lyme disease test and negative on the second. The pain has been identified as one single nerve causing this.He is walking with a brace because he is losing function and falling.  He has also been receiving physical therapy.
Any thoughts on causes or treatments?
Thanks,
Mary
