Ocular Migraine

by Sue__0__0, Jun 07, 1998 12:00AM
: I have had four ocular migraines in the past eight years. I have had one "negative" symptom and the others "positive" symptoms. They lasted about 15 minutes. However, they have not been followed by migraine headaches. I have had a very mild headache. Is there anything that should be taken to prevent these? Also, how serious are they? I have seen an opthomologist who said they were probably ocular migraines. Thank you.

Dear Sue:
The frequency of these spells is not usually an indication for so called migraine preventative treatment.
The most important issue here is to make sure that  these spells are not serious (and they do not seem serious as suggested by the long history of 8 years, their infrequency and the fact that your ophthalmologist did not think anything serious is happening in your eye)
If the frequency of these spells increase, I would suggest that you consult with a Neurologist with special interest in Neuroophthalmology.
At the Cleveland Clinic you may see Dr Patrick Sweeney by calling 1 800 CCF CARE
Good luck
