Ouch!!!!

Ouch!!!!

I have been taking Lamictal for my seizures for about 2 years. My gums have periodically swelled up. It is mostly on my front gums both top and bottom  This is not only very painful but also embarrassing. Lately my gums from molar to molar have been swelling. Is this a side affect for the medication. If so, what can I do to control this?

Hello.

Yes, gum hyperplasia is a side effect of Lamotrigine. But is a rare side effect.

I would recommend that you discuss with your neurologist. If your seizures are adequately controlled by Lamotrigine, it will not be a good idea to change the medication. But if your neurologist thinks it is safe, the medication can be changed.

You may take vitamin supplementation.
