My brother is 14. He has severe pain between his right eye and ear that does not stop, and has had it for a little over 6 months without any kind of remission. He’s been out of school ever since it started because it hurts so much. Sometimes it spreads to the left side of his head, but it generally stays only on the right, an inch in from his right temple. He says it’s about the size of a golf ball.
That is the first kind of headache he has. The other one (even though the first one is so painful) is even more painful. This one is very short (lasts about 60 seconds), and occurs randomly, about 60 times per day. He says it feels like lightning shooting around his head. Not relegated to only one place, like the first headache.
He also vomits several times a day and his hands lose some sensation, which could be due to the constant pain (I don’t know). It seems like his short term memory has gotten worse. Also, his right eye (the side that the constant pain is on) waters slowly and lightly but continuously throughout the day. There are other facial symptoms, except that his face often gets very red when the headaches get worse. He says that he has occasional muscle twitches and often feels weak during attacks (but that might be a given).
The headaches overlap, and he has them both every day. I have ruled out cluster headaches (they are longer but go into remission), idiopathic stabbing headaches (they go into remission and are pointed and relegated to a smaller area), tumors (he’s had an mri), trigeminal neuralgia (no pain in face and not triggered by touching face), and most kinds of migraines because they simply don’t describe his symptoms.
He’s been to a couple neurologists, but they diagnosed him with migraines and cluster headaches and the meds didn’t help him. Please, if you have any ideas, let me know because I’m out of them.
