PAINFULLL...VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION IN DISABLED LOVED ONE

A family member has partial paralysis from a CVA years ago.  He fell on the small of his back, and Xray showed a compression fracture.  Recovery is sooo slow, and the pain has been terrible.  Any ideas for pain relief and rehabilitation of this type injury when the person is already disabled?  There is partial paralysis on the right side, and there is also a balance problem.  This person uses a walker (he left it behind when he fell).  HELP - WE ARE DESPERATE!!

Dear Jani,
Compression fractures can be quite painful.  They may be treated with surgery or bedrest, depending on the particular situation.  There are many strategies for dealing with the pain and the bottom line is to use what works for a patient.  Often, in cases that are refractory to traditional pain regimens, a consult to an anesthesiologist who specializes in pain can be quite useful.  They deal in pain daily and may have some good suggestions in your case.
Good luck.
