POLIO IN 1958

by ANNSUE, Nov 13, 2007 11:27AM
I WAS TOLD I HAD POLIO IN 1958 OR 1959, I HAVE NOT AND CAN NOT FIND ANY MEDICAL RECORDS FOR THOSE YEARS (CHARITY HOSPITAL NEW ORLEANS LA). I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO EVALUATE SOME MEDICAL CONDITIONS.  I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD THAT WHEN I RECEIVED THE POLIO VACINE (I CAUGHT POLIO FROM IT) IT WAS THE LIVE VIRUS.  EVERYTHING I HAVE READ RELATE TO POLIO AFFECTING YOUR LEGS, ARMS ETC BUT NEVER THE FACE.  MY MOTHER WHO HAS PASSED AWAY WOULD BE TO ONLY ONE TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS.  MY MOTHER TOLD ME THAT THE AREA MY POLIO STRUCK WAS MY FACE, I HAD TO HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY FOR MY NOSE AND SINUS AREA.   I HAVE NOTICED IN PICTURES AT THE AGE OF 10 OR SO, I HAD A TIME THAT MY FACE PULLED A LITTLE TO THE SIDE AND ONE EYE SAGS A LITTLE MORE THAN THE OTHER EYE.  TODAY I'M HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MEMORY LOST (SHORT TERM), CONCENTRATION, I HAVE HEADACHES ALL THE TIME, THE LEFT SIDE OF MY FACE SAGS MORE THAN THE RIGHT SIDE. BUT MY MUSCLES ON MY RIGHT SIDE IS WEAKER THAT MY LEFT (MY ARM,LEGS AND I'M ALSO NUMB ON THE RIGHT SIDE) I'M ALWAYS TIRED, I HAVE LOWER BACK PAIN, I CAN'T WALK A LONG DISTANCE....NOW SOME OF MY SYMPTONS I'M QUESTIONING IF IT'S AGING OR WHAT COULD IT BE.   AND I KNOW NO ONE CAN DETERMINE WHAT WRONG WITHOUT RUNNING TEST.  BUT MY MAIN QUESTION IS HAVE YOU HEARD OF POLIO AFFECTING THE FACE AND YEARS LATER COULD IT CAUSE ANY MORE PROBLEMS.  THANKS

I don't know if you will receive this post, but I just read yours of November 2007.  (my post at this site was October 2007)  I am also a polio survivor and am dealing with the late affects of the disease (Post Polio Syndrome).  Coincidentally, I just met a woman last week whose face was affected by the virus.  And as many of us have learned, the virus may have significantly affected specific body parts at the time of the attack, but it also was present in the rest of our body and as time goes by, those weakend parts become problematic.    I would recommend that you continue your research into Post Polio Syndrome and find either a polio specialist or a physiatrist in your area to help access your situaiton.  PPS never goes away and your future happiness relies on your understanding of the condition and your knowledge based self care.     Bonnie   polio in 1955, age 3
