Parkinsons: tracheotomy due to chronic pneumonia

My stepfather has had Parkinsons dx for 15 years, he is now experiencing chronic pneumonia.  The pulmonologist is recommending a tracheotomy due to the succtionings affect on his system.  He is currently on a feeding tube.

What are some questions we should be asking of the doctors?

Hi,

How are you?
Tracheostomy will prevent the accumulation of secretion in the lung. Regular drainage by a tracheostomy tube will ease breathing.
An intravenous sedative is usually given before the procedure. After the procedure excessive secretions and blood should be suctioned properly to prevent a drop in oxygen saturation and to maintain proper hygiene.
Follow up care will include regular monitoring of the patient so that the tube does not get dislodged, ensure that the inner cannula is cleaned every 8 hrs and suction should be done whenever required.
Let me know if you need more information. Do keep us posted!
