Petit Seizure...2 yr.old

  A few days ago my 2 year old son experienced what my pediatrician said was a petit mal seizure.  We are scheduled for an eeg in a few days.  my question is, is it possible for this to be a one time incident, and what if any is the long term damage of a seizure to the brain.  I have been watching him so closely to see if it will happen again, but he seems to be so completely normal.  Also, what will happem when I take him for this test, what happens at an eeg, and what kind of information will it be able to give me.  There is no history of seizures in mine or my husbands families.
===========================================================================
No permanent damage is done to the brain during an petit mal seizure. I a
petit mal seizure occurrs as part of the syndrome of Childhood Absence
epilepsy it is a recurrent phenomenomon which can be controlled by
medication and frequently "burns-out" late in childhood leaving the child seizure free.
a family history is by no means necessary for the diagnosis.
The EEG is performed by sticking recording electrodes (approximately 20)
to the scalp and recording electrical activity form the brain.
If seizure activity occurrs it is picked up as characteristic waveforms
on the EEG which which in the case of childhood absence epilepsy are
highly characteristic.
The recording itself takes about 20 minutes.
