: Can caffiene- huge amounts cause petit-mal seizure activity.
==================================================================================
No it is unlikely that large amounts of caffeine would cause petit-mal seizures.   Petit-mal seizures consist of staring spells where the person is unresponsive.  They are unlikely to occur as a single episode.  These seizures are congenital in etiology, and are not due to exposure to any agents or trauma.  Excessive caffeine can cause irregularity in heart beats, and may make someone feel as though they may faint, but this is not a seizure.  Occasionally when people faint they will experience some twitching movements of the arms which may be described as seizure like activity but again this does not represent a seizure disorder.  I hope this information has been useful.  However, if you are concerned that you are experiencing petit-mal seizures I would recommend seeing a neurologist or local medical doctor for diagnostic and possible treatment options specific to your medical condition.  This information is  provided for general medical education purposes only.  Please consult your physician.  If the Cleveland Clinic can be helpful in the diagnosis of your problem call 1-800-223-2273 ext 45559 or 216-444-5559 to arrange an appointment.
