Phenytoin and Phenobarb-- Reactions on each other, blood sugar

by molebro1, Feb 05, 2008 04:55PM
Recently, I posted a 226 glucose reading on a test taken at 6:30 a.m.  I've take dilantin and phenobarbital for many years but have never had a high blood sugar reading.

I've read dilantin can raise blood glucose.

ALSO, my dilantin showed that it was vundetectable although I take 3 kapseals in themorning and 2 at night RELIGIOUSLY.  I have read that phenobarb can cause dilantin to be metabolized quickly -- esp. if someone might tend to be a quick metabolizer  due to enzymes, whatever.

I have not had a seizure  for 18 years -- since I started the phenobarb.  A former doctor noted 6 years ago that I was "just barely in the therapeutic range" but told me he would "leave it alone" because my luck had been so good   Of course there is a difference between a .10 and a .06.

So here are my questions (with a couple of "ifs) -

#1 IF the dilantin is raising the glucose, is there an answer -- short of switcing to another med (which I would prefer not to do)?

#2  IF the phenobarb is lowering the dilantin level: What can be done?  Would changing my dosing and, possibly having the blood test repeated at 11 a.m. to see if that would have an effect on both readings?

Thanks very much

Stefano
