Pineal Gland Cyst

by Tarheeljoe, Nov 04, 2004 12:00AM
Imy wife was diagnosed with a hearing loss recently involving the small bones behind the ear drum. She is scheduled to see a specialist next week.  During the investigation phase an MRI was done with and with out contrast.  A pineal gland cyst was discovered.  It is 1.3cm by 1.9cm by .9 cm.  During the last 4 months she has had headaches that are increasing. She says they are always there only verying in intensity as well as increaed sensitivity to light.  She says that light make the headaches worse.  Her peripheral vision is slightly reduced and is sometimes blurred or double. She has been extremley tired and can easily sleep 12-15 hours a day.  She doesn't wake up rested.  She tosses and turns all night and says she has very vivid dreams sometime resulting in talking or screaming in her sleep. She had a benign tyroid tumor removed 2 years ago and is on synthroid.  She has had her medication levels monitored monthly and her PC has said they are with in the normal range. I have seen an increase in the fatigue and headaches and they, as well as the hearing loss, has affected her sales job.  She has seen a Nurosurgen and he is not sure if the symptoms are caused by the cycst and wants to take another look in 3 months.  She is scheduled to see a neurologist for possible migraines and have a complete eye exam.  She is being sent from one DR to another but they don't seem to talk to one another.

HELP!!  I am very concerned that something is being missed. It has already been 6 weeks.  Can the Pineal cyst cause these symptoms? Can migraines cause these symptoms?

Having the consult with the neurologist is important. These could represent a form of migraine headache or could be due to the cyst. Without seeing your wife and reviewing the scan I can not determine which is likely. The neurologist should be able to help figure this out. Good luck.

I have had extremely bad headaches for the past year and a half. Sometimes they will go away for a week or so, but pretty much they are constant. It gets so bad that I get dizzy even when I am sitting down. Also my vision gets blurry at times. And no matter how much sleep I get I am always constantly tired. I could sleep 8 hours and be exhausted the next day or sleep 10 hours and still be exhausted. I had blood work done and they came up with my Sed Rate level being 31 which isn't too much higher since normal is 20 or below. I also just got a catscan and they say there is a 2 low density ill-defined lesion in the region of the pineal gland. They said it most likely represents a pineal cyst. Is this something I should be really worrying about? And if so what are the procedures that need to be done?

I'm 26 now and I've had all the same symptoms most of my life - chronic headaches, constant tiredness, excessive sleeping anywhere from 12-18 hours straight. And recently my vision is getting worse in my left eye, which is also the same side I get my extremely bad headaches on. My doctor thought they were cluster headaches. Everything always seems too bright and if I don't wear sunglasses or lower the shades it hurts my eyes.

I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy. I also have a depression/mood disorder. I've had blood work, MRI's, CAT scans and a spinal tap and they never find anything, but I keep reading about all these people with the exact same symptoms who have Pineal Gland Cysts.
I also recently found out that I had sinusitis, and that an MRI I had years earlier revealed cysts and in my maxillary sinus (also on the left side) which my doctor never even told me about because it supposedly wasn't anything to worry over.

Are pineal gland cysts considered in the same non-critical way? Or are they hard to locate? and do you have to get a specific kind of scan? Because I find it very strange that I keep getting worse and instead of finding a cause they just keep finding more new symtoms.
But even a hypochondriac doesn't have as many, 'different' disorders and I do, which is why it seems like somehow these symptoms are connected in someway.

I have been suffering with severe headaches for the past 8 years.  My Dr.'s have ordered every test imaginable with no relief or diagnosis.

I do not sleep well (if at all), i have tension in my neck and shoulders all the time(from constant headaches)fuzzy, blurry vision, my eyes and ears are in constant pain, i am always lightheaded and dizzy.

I had an MRI 3 weeks ago and was told i have a 6mm cyst on my pineal gland.  My Dr seems to think that this has nothing to do with my headaches, however, they can not identify why i am having these headaches.

Any suggestions?
