Please Help Me Understand Neurologist's Opinion

Yesterday, I went to the neurologist with symptoms of headache, dizziness, and dimmed vision.  I was primarily concerned about a brain tumor.  Upon asking me questions and conducting a brief examination, the neurologist indicated that he did not think there was any tumor to worry about, but nevertheless told me to schedule an MRI w/out contrast to "rule out mass."  I do not understand what he meant by mass other than tumor, nor do I understand why he wants to screen me for something he does not think I have.

Can someone tell me if there is another issue he may have had in mind, and whether it is advisible to go through the MRI.  I do not tend to do well with MRI's because I get claustrophobic, and would prefer to avoid it unless there is a realistic chance of a tumor.  I also think this neurologist is the type to just play it safe, considering he previously sent me for an MRI to rule out a spinal problem that he was fairly certain I did not have.

Thank you!

The MRI might be able to detect a reason why you are having your symptoms.   Your doctor wouldn't want you to get an MRI just for the heck of it.  I am sure he just wants to make sure everything is alright.  You would rather be safe than sorry.  Also, they make MRI machines that don't enclose you in.  Check out different facilities in your area to see which ones can accomidate you.  Let them know on the phone you don't like to be closed in, and ask them if there is a window you can look out at.  Hope this helps!!

He must rule out other issues, like MS.  Also, any type of brain tumor would be picked up on the MRI.

Good luck
