Please advise as to what direction to head to...

In September of last year on a  Saturday evening I began experiencing sever pain in my legs. Within 4 days I could not walk and was hopitalized for a week. I have had numerous tests and been to 3 different neurologists and gotten 3 different diagnosis. The first diagnosis was a-typical Guillian Barre. At the hospital I had 2 EMG's the first being "abnormal", the second being borderline. When I left the hospital, I was told that I probably had a virus. I continue to heave severe pain and stiffness in my arm and leg muscles. The stiffness feels like my muscles are so inflamed that the skin is taught and it is very painful. The second diagnosis was myofascial pain syndrome which I understand is shortening of the muscles... The diagnois I got from Emory Clinic 3 weeks ago was "possibly distonia, if you slow your breathing down, you should be fine if not come back" I am completely frustrated as thsi is going on 5 1/2 months and I still do not know what is going on. I had 5 EMG / nerve conduction tests in 2 weeks and 1 Doc says they are abnormal and the other says they ar enot. Each Doctor says the one before is incorrect and at this point, I do not know what to do, where to go or how to find out what is going on. I missed approximately 3 weeks of work and continue to have pain on a daily basis. The only thing that seems to give some relief is Vioxx. I take neurontin 300 mg 3 times per day for an unrelated condition whcih the doctor tried to increase to 300 6 times per day but I felt spacey and couldn't take it. Any advise on where to go or what could be going on?
Thanks,
Sue

Dear Sue:

I am not sure what to tell you.  Usually with GBS one sees motor weakness that is greater than sensory deficits.  That is why the label of atypical GBS that was given.  Usually, the EMG is pretty good at indicating if the disease is demyelinating as in GBS.  The test is best approximately 3 weeks after the onset of symptoms, so since the latter EMGs were considered normal then this would be unlikely.  I am also assuming that all the tests done were normal, such as sedimentation rate, blood counts, etc.  I also assume that you were not ill before the event took place.  The imaging studies such as MRI were also normal?  Since both your legs are involved (each equally involved?) then it would have to be either a systemic problem or spinal cord problem.  Since every thing was normal and you don't have an underlying disease (?) I am alittle stumped.  I would suggest a second opinion from another neurologist.  I would try and see if someone at a large medical center might look at your case.  I know you went to Emery but maybe another institution?

Sorry that I am not much help.

Sincerely,
