Possible Brain Damage?

by GratefulDylan, Dec 02, 2007 07:09PM
Earlier this year I was put on Paxil by a general practitioner, but I quit taking it because it made me feel emotionally numb. I was never informed that you couldn't quit cold turkey though. Anyway, I went through some hard withdrawal symptoms for about 6 months before I realized what was causing it. I've been on Wellbutrin for a little over a month now, but I still don't feel right. I'm fine emotionally, but I still have concentration problems. I have a hard time paying attention to just about anything now and even when I do it's hard to maintain it. I have a hard time hearing and a hard time seeing, but it doesn't seem like it's a problem with my eyes or ears. It feels more like everything is just as clear or as loud as it has ever been, but I just can't concentrate on it. I feel like I'm more inside my head than in the world. Do you think it's possible that I may have brain damage due to the withdrawal? Another thing is that in early 2006 I had a car accident and I severed an artery above on of my eyes and I lost a lot of blood. They did a CAT scan and an MRI right after the accident and they didn't find any damage. Anyway, I don't really feel like I started having this problem until after I quit taking Paxil. I just thought that maybe I should mention that. I have a psychiatrist now and I saw her a few days ago and she put me on Buspar because she thinks that it may be caused by anxiety, I've only been on that for a few days now, but I just wanted some more opinions. Thanks.

Hi.

Paxil (paroxetine) has been reported to have severe withdrawal symptoms, especially if intake is immediately stopped. As early as 2002, the FDA has issued a product warning on this.

However, the problem with the withdrawal symptoms is that they may mask actual conditions that may have the same presentation.

For those that experience severe withdrawal symptoms, it seems the only treatment available is to restart intake of the drug.

If your symptoms persist, you should talk to your psychiatrist about this.

Good luck.
