Possible Fusion/new artificial disc

by Celine Fan, Nov 22, 2004 12:00AM
Hello,

I underwent back surgery in June 1998 for a severe herniated disc at the L4-L5 disc, spinal Stenosis, degenerative disc disease, etc.  Basically I had Cauda Equina Syndrome and complete loss of reflexes/sensation in primarily the left leg, toe to hip loss of sensation, bladder problems.  At the time of the surgery my N/S opted not to fuse the discs for reasons of further loss of mobility.

I have a bulging disc at the L5-S1 now and fear fusion is a definite in my future, which my N/S advised me in '98.  I recently learned of the artificial disc being used in place of fusion, is that correct?  Could it be used on me in the area of the L4-L5 area where surgery was performed in '98 or at the L5-S1 now in place of fusion.  I have heard good things about pain being greatly reduced...what is your opinion?  Thank you in advance!

The artificial discs are still being investigated experimentally. I have no personal experience with these. I would recommend that you have a consultation at a large academic spine center. If you are interested in the discs, then you could research on the internet which centers are working with this. Good luck.
