Post-Appendectomy Leg Ache

by SamTF, Aug 01, 2009 03:29AM
Hi,
I am a 17 year old male who had an appendectomy just under a week ago and am currently experiencing aching in my leg, just above my knee, and also at the very top of my leg, why could this be? It seems worse after a little walking. It is in the right leg, so it is the same size where I was experiencing back pain due to appendicitis.
Thanks
Sam

Hi,

I am not a medical professional, but have had similiar problems. I had my appendix removed two weeks ago and I also had numbness and then severe pain right above my knee (side & top of lower thigh). I discussed this with my doctor at my follow up appointment and he said that the numbness is from being in bed so long and that the pain is from the nerves and mylenth (sp?) sheets regenerating. He said that I probably had a herniated disc that was compressed while on bed rest (I also had back pain). He told me to take a B-12 complex. I have been taking it a week and have noticed that the pain has decreased and I noticed yesterday that I am starting to get a little bit of feeling back in my leg.

I would advise to follow up with your doctor and see if it could be the same thing and if a B-12 complex would be helpful for you. Good luck.

Hi,
The pain in the leg could be due to Femoral nerve entrapment or injury during  Appendectomy. It may improve with physiotherapy. Please consult the surgeon who operated on you to let him know the symptoms. You must consult a neurologist also for a complete examination and investigations like an MRI of the abdomen, pelvic region and leg to know the cause of pain. You may require another surgery if the nerve is entrapped.  Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
