Postpartum muscle weakness

Approximately 9 weeks after my first child, I began having difficulty getting up from chairs, taking stairs, carrying my newborn and having muscle weakness in the legs, hands, arms, and back.  I've been evaluated for MS, MG, PD, Wilsons, Thyroid problems, electrolytes abnormalities, EMGs, Neuroassessments, etc. I'm at the Mayo clinic as I write and have been informed by the specialists that I do not have a neuromuscular disorder.  I truly believe delivery contributed to the onset of the weakness.  I was nearly incapacitated at the time (for about 6 months) but slowly regained some function.  I currently function at about 75% of normal.  What may have likely caused this?

Hello.

Postpartum period is a difficult period. If you have had a normal delivery, the ligaments of the pelvic area have been stretched. Due to the hormones secreted during the last trimester, the ligament support becomes lax. The muscle which support the body have to work extra hard to make up for the laxity of the ligaments.

Do not worry much. The ligaments will soon recover their full strength and your apparent muscle weakness will be gone.

Take the help of physical therapy for a speedy recovery.

Regards
