Treatment of epilepsy you have, the cause, and your overall health. There are some forms of epilepsy which patients can outgrow, and therefore these patients can stop medications. Prior to becoming pregnant you should have a consultation with an epilepsy specialist at an academic center. Dilantin is an effective, but older medication. If you need to be on medication, some of the newer ones may be safer for the baby. Regardless of what medication you take you should take a folic acid supplement to help reduce the risk of birth defects. If you become pregnant, do not stop your medication without consulting a doctor.
Regarding Dilantin and birth control pills, you should inform your gynecologist you are on Dilantin, and they should be able to adjust your birth control regimen.
