Problem Cervical Spine

by Kikko, Oct 06, 2003 12:00AM
25 years ago I had cervical laminectomy at C5-6-7.  Last year had Anterior fusion a C3-4.  Still have neck pain, burning arms and numb hands. Also choking when swallowing.  I am told I possibley will need surgery both front and back of cervical spine to stabilize complete cervical spine as it is tilting in the unsecure area.  Is this a common type of surgery?  I want to feel good again, but do not want to add to my problems. If this surgery is necessary, can a neurosurgeon do this or should I think about going to a specialized neuro-clinic?

I assume you have had cervical flexion and extension films to document the cervical instability. If one of the fusions is incomplete, this could explain the instability. Cervical spine stabilazation surgeries are not uncommon, but if you are questioning the need, then a second opinion is reasonable. You should see a neurosurgeon who specializes in spine surgery, preferably at an academic spine center. This will provide you with more information and allow you to make an informed decision. Good luck
