Progressive vision loss from TBI?

by MonkeyWash, Feb 27, 2009 11:43AM
Hello, I am a 37 year old male, healthy weight, active lifestyle.
Medical Background: I served in Iraq in 2004 and was around various explosions from mortars, IEDs, etc.  I was fortunate to not be directly hit but was close enough to suffer some blast effects.  A month after I returned I was hospitalized with endocarditis, and treated with antibiotics and oxygen treatment for a bit after release.  Other than that I have been physically healthy.  I am being treated for PTSD/Depression and have been taking clonazepam, cyproheptadine, sertraline, and temazepam.for the last couple of weeks.  I also have severe sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine.  Even with the CPAP I don't sleep much at all, and cannot remember the last time I slept an entire night through.  I kick, moan, twitch, and have vivid nightmares.

My question involves my eyesight.  Last year I had a routine eye exam for my myopia.  My prescription in my left eye had changed 1 whole diopter.  This year when I went my left eye changed two diopters and is no longer correctable to 20/20 it is 20/40 at best.  I was seen by a retinal specialist who found no abnormalities or defects as a cause of my eyesight loss.  His suggestion was for a diabetes test, of which I have had two in the last year.  The tests were both normal and I have no family history of diabetes.
Could the vision loss be related to TBI? I did suffer a short blackout from one of the blasts, but my vision was ok afterward, this seems to be progressive whereas I though most TBI vision loss begins at the time and isn't necessarily progressive.
I am scheduled to see a VA neurologist next week, but would appreciate any help in the meantime.  I am frustrated.
