: Do you have anyone on staff with expertise or information in the area of pseudo
brain tumors, specifically as it relates to lifting heavy objects on the job.
I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Sharon, there is no such thing as "pseudo-brain tumors." What you are probably referring to is a condition known as "pseudotumor cerebri", usually seen in obese young women. It is caused by defective reabsorption of spinal fluid, which causes the pressure in the brain and head to rise to abnormally high levels. This can cause headaches, blurred vision, double vision, nausea and vomiting when it flares up. It is treated with drugs, most often one called acetazolamide (Diamox), a diuretic. Removal of spinal fluid from a spinal tap may also alleviate it. Of course, before the diagnosis is made, one must be thoroughly tested to be certain there is not a REAL brain tumor, or an infection like meningitis to explain the symptoms. This usually requires a CAT scan or MRI of the brain, and a spinal tap (lumbar puncture). Straining such as that which occurs when you have a bowel movement, laugh or cough, or lift heavy objects, will raise the pressure in the brain and worsen the symptoms. Repeated heavy lifting or straining during a flareup of the disease should be avoided. I hope this helps answer your question. If you are near Cleveland, any of our Cleveland Cl;inic neurologists would be happy to see you for this problem if you believe you may have it. Our appointment # is 216-444-5559.
