Radial head injury you can hear it also. It is more so at night, when she lies down for bed. Sometimes you cannot hear it. If you press on her carotid artery (either one) the sound is muffled and upon release, you can hear it again. She also has been having headaches, where she describes the pain as someone pulling her hair. She has headaches more frequently now. The noise or bruit has been noticable for over a year and a half. Any info you can share would be helpful.
Dear Brenda,
Ringing in the ear is known as tinnitus. Nontonal tinnitus refers to a specific type that is heard under certain conditions by the patient(subjective) as well as other people (objective). The head noises are usually mechanical in origin and are conducted to the ear by various structures in the head. One of the most common forms is caused by turbulant blood flow in the large blood vessels of the neck or from a malformation of the vessels (AVM). Other etiologies include increased pressure in the head, intracranial aneursym, and rare vascular tumors of the skull. Diseases of the carotid artery can cause similar sounds (bruits) but are rarer. The combination of progressive headache and tinnitus warrents evaluation soon. I recommend an evaluation by a neurologist and an MRI scan. If you are interested in getting an evaluation at CCF call 1-800-CCF-CARE. Good Luck.
