: I am confused about my ana titer being positive. I was diagnosed as possibly having MS. I  was wandering if MS will show an positive result on the ana titer. From what I have looked up on anti nuclear antibodies it will show positive in other autoimmune dieases, such as lupus and other disorders but it doesn't list MS having ana positive results. Could it be a false positve result?
dear anneliese,
ana results as you pointed out are an indicator of lupus but it can also be
positive in other autoimmune disorders. The most important thing is how
high is the results.
all laboratories will report a positive titer as anything above 1:40
dilution. It is considered significant if the titers are above 1:320
and more significant if it is 1:640. The pattern is also important to
know is it speckled or not.
Since you have not provided us with the actual result I cannot comment
on the result itself, additionally if you are concerned about the result
you might want to seek a consultation with a rheumatologist to help with
the diagnostic implication of the test result.
