I have had many mysterious symptoms over the past few months, but have
not been able to get any answers as to what might be wrong. I am a 38 yr
old female, and I started out getting Migraines about a year ago. In the
past 3 months I have has severe Vertigo. My primary Physician refered me to
an ENT Dr. He did a hearing test.. Normal.. he did the test for fluid in my
ear, normal.. he did an ENG and there was a 30% reduction in my right ear.
So he thought it was Meneire's disease. He prescribed a diuretic and Antivert.
I was still dizzy and then other things started to happen. These may or may
not have anything to do with what is going on,, but i'm going to list my symptoms
and see what you think..
Vertigo, about 75% of my day. Occasional Migraines.. maybe 1 a week,
terrible itching all over but severly in my feet and hands. Bloating in my
hands and feet. Ringing in my ears. The feeling like something is biting me, but
no signs of bug bites etc, and then it itches in that spot. Severe diarrhea on one day
and then constipated the next. Parts of my legs go numb. Severe fatigue, this happens
about 5 of 7 days. Pain in my left ear, mind you..not the ear with 30% reduction.
My ENT is refering me back to my family practioner. His suggestion is that
I go see a Neurologist. But I am seeking your opinion to. Even if it's just
to help me with the right questions to ask.. or where maybe he should be looking
Any help you can give me I'd appreciate..
Thank you
Dear Lisa:
Sorry to hear about all of your problems.  Let's start with the vertigo.  There are several centers, one being the Cleveland Clinic, that specializes in finding cures for vertigo.  There is a 80% chance that if you undergo particle relocation therapy (not-a-medicine) but a relocation of particles in the middle ear that have been shown to cause vertigo in most of the benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.  We do it here at the Cleveland Clinic and they also do this procedure at UCLA and Harvard.  I think that you will find that this will help the vertigo.  Next I think you need to get rid of your migraines.  What medications are you taking to relieve your headaches?  I think a headache specialist would be in order.  We have several world-known headache specialist here at the Clinic but there are many around the country.  I think that these are two issues that need to be resolved, and they are clearly neurological in origin.  I am not saying that the other symptoms you are having are not neurological.  While you are getting these two things looked at and resolved, see if the other symptoms do not diminish.  Then let's tackle these.  Start with the first two, then tackle the others.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD, RPS

Dear Doctor,
Thank you for your response..  I am currently taking Amerge for my Migraines.  Sometimes I think they are more tension or sinus related though.. and Motrin works on those.. the dizziness has subsided some.
But my leg's getting numb is getting worse.  Recently my Dr. also put me on Elavil for the headaches and Librax for my IBS.  Now I'm mostly constipated.. I can't seem to win with this !
I appreciate any suggestions you may have.  I will talk to my MD about the particle relocation you spoke of.
Thank you again
Lisa
