My mother learned this week that she has a meningioma located near the pituitary gland.  Her physician told us that a meningioma is usually benign but that hers is located in a difficult place for surgery.  She will be seeing a neurosurgeon next week near our home in Southwest Virginia.  Can you recommend a center that is particularly good in treating this kind of brain tumor.  I want her to have the best treatment available.  Also, are meningiomas usually benign and can the radiologist know that it is this kind of tumor based on the MRI results?  I really appreciate any help.

True meningioma in the pituitary gland area is rare, but meningioma located around/above the gland is not uncommon.
Based on the MRI characteristic of the tumor the neuroradiologist
should have a good idea what the tumor is. Of course the definitive
diagnosis will require tissue sample.
Meningiomas are generally benign, less than 10% of all meningiomas ever cause symptoms. Many are picked up incidentally on imaging study or autopsy. Clinical manifestations depend on location of the tumor.
The most important factors in clinical outcome are location and resectability. There are different techniques in approaching tumor in that location. The surgery should be performed in a center with experience in doing these kind of cases. If you would like to be evaluated at the clinic
