My son who is almost 6 has been having slight tremors since he was born
and we took him to a nerologist when he was 15 months old he will grow
out of it they said. Well at 3 they found low upper body tone and a speech
delay. He recives ot and speech at school. The dr. does not seem to understand
when I tell her about the tremors. I know that a examaime is needed to give
exactly what is wrong but I just need a little help to possible find a name for this.
He wakes up with the shakes,if he is tying his shoe he tremors if he holds small
objects like to a board game he shakes, while he watches a movie that is exciting
he cups his hands inward and shakes.I am at a loss as to where to look. I don`t know
if any of this can be from how his dad treated him as a small child really man handled
him I don`t know for sure but suspect he shook him while I was out. Sorry this is long
I didn`t want to forget something. Thank You for a great site.    Veronica.
Dear Veronica:
I am sorry to hear about your son.  Without examining him or going over his records it is impossible for me to give you a diagnosis over the internet.  It is not normal for a child to have tremor.  There various types of tremors, there are those that are found at rest, those that are manifested while trying to perform tasks, there are those that affect the trunk part of the body and those that affect the extremities.  There are some types that are inherited, some are due to medications, some are due to trauma, some are just found without any reason.  Epilepsy can look like tremor, also.  I think what you need to do, is see a good pediatric neurologist.  There are some tests that your son needs.  Depending on what the physicial exam shows, he may need a metabolic work-up, genetics work-up, blood work, possible imaging of his brain etc.  I would try and find the best pediatric neurologist in your area.  If you are in the Cleveland area, we would be happy to see your son (1-800-CCF-CARE).  Best of luck and let us know what happens.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD
