Good Morning!
As a result of a collapsed fusion, my MRI now indicates myelomalacia at 3 levels.  I had a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) removed in order to have the MRI conducted.  I'm not certain yet whether surgery will be an option for the collapsed disc, however, my pain doctor would like to re-implant the SCS in the near future.  He is unfamiliar with Myelomalacia and cannot address that condition.  He mentioned that the SCS does lay up against the cord and therefore, I'm a bit hestitant to have re-implanted.  Any thoughts on a SCS along side of Myelomalacia in the cord?  Thanks so much!

Dear Lynn:
Please forgive the delay, as you know the construction of this site has made things alittle more difficult.  Sorry to hear about your problem.  It is likely that the myelomalcia occurred during surgery (ischemia of the cord) and what damage that been done is likely already occurred.  I would think that the nerve stimulator would have no effect on either progression of the malcia or worsening of it.  However, it would be prudent to talk to your neurosurgeon and inform him or her.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro MD
