: My father was diagnosed with narcolepsy some 20 years ago.  He cannot function
on a day-to-day basis without the use of barbituates supplied by his physician.
I was wondering if there were any new advances in treating narcolepsy as
the medication is very strong and obviously doing his body even more damage.
Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Hi Geri, The first medicine tried in treating Narcolepsy is a stimulant,
there are many different ones to choose from.  This medicine is in a different calss than the barbiturates
and may be more helpful to your Dad, as I stated earlier in your other question, a doctor that specializes in Sleep may be more helpful to you for details of a treatment
regiment.
