Doctors,
Ive posted on your forum before and was pleased with your suggestions.
I need a couple things clarified about a neurogenic bladder. I always think I understand what my doctors have said until I walk out of the office, then Im confused all over again!
I have never had a specific test that helped to diagnose me with neurogenic bladder. My PC doc and Urologist both said thats what I have.  Unlike most people with bladder disorders, I have a problem with retaining urine. I self cath about 6 times per day to prevent UTI's.
My questions are:
1.  Because I have urine retention instead of urgency/frequency problems, does it make sense for me to have a neurogenic bladder, or can this term not be used in my situation?
2.  Have you ever heard of the possibility of Amytrptaline (Elavil) to be the cause of bladder problems?  One doctor recommended that I discontinue this med and see if it helps.
Thanks in advance for your help...your forum is great!

Dear Diane,
thank you for the excellent question.
What you have is flaccid bladder and hence problem with emptying,
which can be caused by a  problem affecting  the nerves responsible for that function and so the name NEUROGENIC bladder (neuro=nerves, genic=loosely translated because of /from the).
You are doing exactly the right thing, intermittent self cath.
Other options include Foley cath, and a urological procedure where a an opening is made in the bladder and a cath is inserted and comes out of the lower abdomen.
The other type is the hyperactive bladder, where the main problem is failure to store rather than failure to empty. This is treated with medication to decrease the contractility of the bladder muscle.
There is also a type where there is a disconcert between the bladder contractility and the muscle controlling the opening to the urethra.
Elavil can cause urinary retention and if you are taking elavil and have urinary retention I would agree with stopping the medicine as it may help
Good luck and Ihope the above information is helpful. Pse don't hesitate to post follow up quesition / comments if you have any.
