Eleven weeks ago I had a bladder infection that kept lingering. I went through seven antibiotics, IV's and injections. It progressed to a kidney infection.  My urine continuously shows bacteria, and a high amount of blood in urine (hematuria). Diagnosed with Neurogenic Bladder by Urologist. Said to stem from retaining urine. I started self-cath 3 times per day and now self-cath 6-7 times per day which results in about 500cc per time.  Urologist recommended tests for MS and Diabetes. Neg Diabetes. Other symptoms include: Moderate to severe backpain, trunk pain, leg cramps and pain, left leg and foot fall asleep very often, major headaches, migraines, anxiety (felt like insides were shaking so I was diagnosed with a tremor).  I have severe fatigue, fever on and off, severe fatigue (did I mention that?) unsteady on my feet at times, periodic dizzyness, and a general feel bad all over feeling.  Other than these I feel fine!  Had catscan at hospital which was negative, IVP looked good except for non-functioning bladder. I have an MRI scheduled for this week.  Internal exam was ok, 3 yrs ago I had a urethea scope test which was negatve, along with a negative IVP, both because of hematuria.  Crazy thing is, I feel like my bladder still works fine. I still am able to go on my own although it takes 10 minutes or so of concentration. I can still feel the urge to void at times, but it is becoming less frequent.  My question is, I have all these symptoms but no answers.  Does this at all sound like possible MS, or anything else you can think of?  I appreciate any suggestions or thoughts.  I have no insurance so each visit really hurts financially. Thanks again.

Dear Diane :
The symptoms that you mention may indeed be from MS, specially the bladder symptoms. Bladder involvement is often an early feature of MS. Alternative causes could include a tumor or other mass lesion in the spine or in the spinal cord/roots, a problem in the meninges, or a malformation of the spine.
I am sorry to hear about your not being insured. The cheapest good way of getting the diagnosis sorted out is to find a good clinical neurologist who could prioritise tests so that you do not undergo an excessive diagnostic work-up.
Good luck!
