I had BAK fusion in 9-97 at L 4/5 .  The surgery was done posteriorly.  I did very well post op, wore a hard brace for 13 weeks.  The low back was very sore and still is but the right leg pain I had prior to surgery was completely gone.  4 and 1/2 months post op I developed left leg pain from hip to ankle on the outside of my leg.  Also started suffering from episodes of severe low back pain more on the left than right side.  Any twisting motion aggravated the left leg pain.  I kept getting worse until I started neurontin 2 months ago, have increased dosage fromm 900 to 1600 milligrams but if I am too active the leg pain brakes through.I am so grateful for the neurontin but feel I am only covering up the pain.  Does the neurontin cure anything?  I have not had another MRI or myleogram since surgery so am not sure what is causing this, any ideas?  Thanks.

Neurontin will not cure any physical compression on nerve roots in the spine.
It simply 'quiets' the nerve impulses generated from the site of irritation.
You may have a small piece of disc material or some foraminal stenosis on the
left side compressing a nerve root.  Regardless, see if conservative therapy
won't help the pain - take it easy for a while.  If your pains persist your
physician may consider injections and physical therapy.  If this fails, a
CT/myelogram would be in order.
Talk to your surgeon and see if he doesn't recommend the same.
