Dilantin-125 controlled his seizures until the middle of July when we started to notice a different kind of seizure. He was tested again to see if there were any changes in his MRI/MRA,
EEG and Prolonged Video EEG. No changes were found. The current seizures (myoclonic) have not been controlled. Several medications (increased Dilantin, Depakote, Mysolin) have been tried with no success.
We are interested in getting a second opinion and have been told to seek Dr. Wyllie. Does Dr. Wyllie have special interest in pediatric strokes? What is involved with a second opinion? Will Kevin be retested or will the doctors use the existing information? If the existing information will be used, how do we get the information forwarded to you? How can we find out if our insurance company will be accepted at Cleveland Clinic? We live in Indiana and want to find the best location for the second opinion and we assume it will be expensive.
The good news is that Kevin shows no signs of damage from the stroke and lives a fairly normal life (other than taking medications and wearing a helmet as often as he is willing to cooperate). We are looking for advice.
Dear Mom:
Dr. Elaine Wyllie is an internationally renowned expert on pediatric epilepsy. She is, of course, also a very good general pediatric neurologist who can fully address the question of the basal ganglia stroke. Seeking a second opinion for Kevin from Dr. Wyllie is indeed a very good idea.
Depending upon the adequacy of information available, Kevin may or may not need further tests at Cleveland Clinic.
The best way to start is for you or your pediatrician to call Dr. Wyllie's office (216-444-2095, or 800-23-2273 toll-free). Records could be faxed or mailed. I am sure Dr. Wyllie's office would be very happy to help you with all the logistics and insurance questions that you may have.
Good Luck!
