Hi Carol, I have just been diagnosed with a Schwannoma also.  Can you tell me how long you were hospitalized, etc? Are you able to function as before now?  What were your symptoms before?  I have had ongoing pain for 12 + years on the left side of my neck, and after 5 MRIs over this time frame, was told this week I have a Schwannoma, very possibly.  Good luck.   April Haynes

Dear Ms. Gilin:
Schwannomas are benign tumors of the nerve sheath. They can occur in the
spine or inside the skull. They are typically benign and in some forms can
be malignant. They grow slowly and present with signs of compression of
the nerve that they involve. Some of these tumors have been associated
with chromosomal abnormalities. Some patients can develop other tumors
elsewhere and in some patients they can present at a very young age as
part of a disease called neurofibromatosis. The other common location for
these tumors is in the base of the skull on the eighth cranial nerve (the
vestibular nerve) and can be called acoustic neuromas. Those tumors present
with hearing loss.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck!
