: First of all, thanks for the information in response to "undiagnosed brother"  (see September 10)  I was just wondering how long the recovery should be for someone with Transverse Myelitis?  Are we talking weeks or months (or longer?)  They are starting to decrease his medication but he doesn't really talk about how his hand feels as far as wether or not his sense of feeling has come back in his left hand and we don't want to "get on his case" so to speak and make him nervous about it.  Thanks for the forum.  It's a real good source of information.

Hello Chanie,
Generally speaking neurological recovery depends on the amount of nervous tissue involoved and what the cause of he problem is.
It is difficult to guess at when your brother should start getting better not knowing what the cause of his problems are.
If it was an inflammatory transverse myelitis then recovery generally begins within weeks to months
and can progress up to 1 year.  The maximum amount of recovery is generally seen in the first few months.
I hope that this is helpful, if you would like to see a neurologist that specializes in myelopathies call the Mellen Center 216-444-8600.
