In January of this year I was diagnosed as having DDD with foraminal stenosis after having cervical spinal x-ray and MRI.  Was then treated with cervical epidural spinal injections (x3), which relieved some but not all upper body symptoms.  However, when I reminded doctor that I still had severe pains in lumbar region and legs, an additional series of epidurals was scheduled for lumbar spine, without any additional x-rays or MRI.  Again, much of the problems have been relieved but I still have lower back pain, groin, thigh, calf, hip and ankle pain and can feel it getting slightly worse as each day passes.  Its now been 9 days since last epidural.  My question is, shouldn't at least an x-ray have been done to rule out possibility of tumor?  Or, should it be done now?  The cervically related pains are also coming back gradually and once in a while I will have a very bad "attack" in neck.  Am currently taking 750 mg Relefin x2/day but have tried to not take Darvocet unless absoslutely needed.  On-going worst pain is still at night in hips back and left leg.  The rest are intermittant.  Also, an additional question regarding NSAIDS - I've read where they may relieve symptoms but actually can worsen the disease.  Do you concur?  Thanks for your attention.

Thanks for the question. The decision regarding tests that are to be done are really between you and your doctor. I would say that most patients do have imaging studies before procedures are performed on them but it is not an absolute. It is possible that your symptoms are related to DDD but a detailed history and physical exam would go a long way to help determine if something else is going on. You should remember that epidural blocks are not without risk and should not be done lightly. While NSAIDS may cause stomach problems I've not heard about their worsening DDD. Have you been involved in PT. It sounds like it may be worthwhile to seek asecond opinion. If you wish to see someone at CCF call 216 444 5559. Good luck
