: I have been having burning sensations all over my body for the past
two months, sort of like taking a bath in Ben-Gay all of the time.
At times it gets worse, and I get ice cold or burning hot hands and feet,
but then it goes away again when I rest up a little.  I am currently
taking Elavil which was originally to help my Fibromyalgia but
also seemed to help this a little when I increased the dosage (up to 50mg
a day).  I am concerned that these symptoms don't seem typical of
fibromyalgia, but my doctor can't understand why they come and go so
much if they are something else. (several times a day)  I have had blood
tests for thyroid, liver, sugar, and B-12 with no abnormalities seen.  My
doctor did notice that I seemed to have a high temperature the last time I
was in (around 100 degrees) but didn't know if that was the cause of my
symptoms.  I just finished a round of anti-biotics for that, but haven't
noticed an improvements in my symptoms.  Do you have any ideas or
suggestions on what to try next?  Thank You.
=Dear Tom, the information you have supplied me would suggest a sensory problem invloving your entire body (head, trunk, arms and legs) that is continous.  In addition, there appears to be some variability in the symptons involving the hands and the feet.  This would indicate involvement of both the central and peripheral (perhaps) nervous system.  I do not know of any common disorder of the nervous system which could explain your symptons.  I would recommend an evaluation by a neurologist and perhaps a pain specialist.  Hopefully, they can identify the cause and supply a proper treatment regimne for pain control.  "This information is provided for general medical education purposes only.  Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options."
