: I posted a message on January 2,1998 about my daughter who has cortical dysplasia.  Several days later I read an article on InteliHealth News about a new drug they are testing called insulin-like growth factor or IGF-1.  They are considering this for such diseases as Alzheimer's and ALS but would it also benefit someone like my daughter.  Is there somewhere else I can look for more information on this drug and its possible benefits? It is impossible to speculate as to whether this drug will be of any benefit in cortical dysplasia, at this stage is has not even been clarified as to whether it has any benefit in Alzheimers or ALS.
On  theoretical grounds one point to consider is that these two diseases are in quite a different pathological category from cortical dysplasia, they are degenerative diseases where the nerve cells were once present and are slowly dying off, in cortical dysplasia there are abnormal growth patterns of existing cells so the underlying problem is quite different.
This does not completely preclude the possibility that there may be a role for the drug in cortical dysplasia ,but it is a long way from a drug being tested in one disease to havind a proven, licensed indication in another condition.
One way to keep up with this issue would be to contact the company which manufactures the drug if the name is mentioned in the article you read.
The FDA which licenses these trials might also have further details.
