My endocrinologist has suggested an MRI-Pituitary because I'm
hypothyroidHypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism - primary
Hypothyroidism - secondary
Neonatal hypothyroidism
Primary and secondary hypothyroidism with a slowly increasing
prolactin level. An MRI six years ago found nothing.
I also had (have?) non-familiar megalencephaly and would like to know if it is usually accompanied by
endocrineEndocrine glands
Pancreatic islet cell tumor problems. Also, can the MRI be used to collect information on both conditions without increasing the cost too much?
Thank you,
PS: The folks at Cleveland Clinic are great. Watched them care for a toddler with Stevens-Johnsons syndrome a while back...

Dear Jennifer:
Thank you for your kind comments.
I am not sure what you exactly mean by "non-familiar megalencephaly" however most MRI scans done on the brain should reveal problems if they are there. Now in the case of pituitary

Chronic motor tic disorder that may not be the case as some pituitary tumors may not be visible on standard MRI testing.
I agree with your physician that an MRI is warranted again since you seem to have thyroid problems that are found in the presence of an elevated prolactin level. As you may know, this may now reveal a pituitary tumor. If this is the case, treatment should be initiated to prevent further problems associated with prolactin secreting pituitary tumors.
I am not sure about the cost of MRI's and the best place to find out about this is to contact the people that will be performing this test.
If you have any further questions please write again.
Good Luck!
