Rehabilitation after surgery for meningothelial meningioma

Rehabilitation after surgery for meningothelial meningioma

Hi - my mum, who is in her 80s has had surgery to remove a meningioma (front of the brain).  It was causing her terrible communication and memory problems most of which (around 2 months after the surgery) have now disappeared.  She is able to converse normally with just the odd memory lapse.  The main problem is that she is still unable to walk (she was walking OK before the operation).  Immediately after the operation she had very little movement in her right hand and foot - now she can move them with no problem - and is able to use her right hand with little problem.  She is, however, still not able to stand up or walk (she needs turntable + 2 to get out of bed).  Today we had a meeting with one of the nurses who says that the occupational therapist and the physiotherapist both feel that she will make no further improvement - which obviously means that she will not be able to return home.  As the movement is there - and the nurse says that she is able to bear her own weight, I feel that there must be a way forward.  Please can you suggest what we can do next.  If we can get to the stage when she is able to take a few steps to the toilet that's all we need initially.  I asked the hospital whether she'd seen a psychiatrist - as I felt that perhaps there was a mental bar to starting to walk again (in all she's spent nearly 3 months in bed, so it could almost be a case of relearning).  I don't want her to have to go into a care home.
