Relating to EEG report

by Manju61, Nov 07, 2007 03:04AM
My son aged 14 had a seizure for 2 minutes when he had fever for 7 days. Later it was found that it was a viral fever. The EEG Report comes asintermittently. poor alpha activity . The MRI was normal and the neuro specialist said that the child is ok and no neuro deficit is there.

What needs to be done in this case.

Hi.

Has your son experienced this before when he was a lot younger? Your son probably had a febrile seizure which accounted for his symptoms. Although is is uncommon to have febrile seizures beyond the age of 5, it is not impossible.

Febrile seizures are generally harmless and do not lead to brain damage.

Although another seizure disorder cannot be totally ruled out, it would be best to observe your son for the moment to see if any other seizure attacks would occur.  It would also be advisable that whenever he has a fever, you should try to prevent it from getting higher.

You could also have regular check-ups with your son's neurologist to monitor his condition.

Hi Manju,
I want to know whether any investigations were done, when he had fever with seizure.
As fever with seizure at age 14, I would suspect meningitis in child and would like to do a CSF analysis to come to a conclusion.
MRI normal and no neuro deficit at discharge do not rule out meningitis.
Well the symptoms as you have described are self-limiting which go against the diagnosis of meningitis.
Seizure at such an age could be due any electrolyte abnormality or any infection.
Next time if the child has seizure, proper events during seizure needs to be noted and complete seizure work up has to be done to arrive at a diagnosis.
