Repeated vertigo

by binkers1120, Oct 30, 2003 12:00AM
I have had occassion spells of vertigo all of my life when ill.  Two weeks ago they became very frequent, several times an hour.  I went to the hospital and they did a CAT scan (no dye) and told me that it was not a stroke, however I have a lot of fluid in my sinuses draining into my ears.  I just developed allergies in the last year and I am constantly congested.  I do not have any earaches or infection.  They gave me medicine and it helped a little and the spells died down to one maybe every other day (they only last less than a minute).  However in the last few days they have become bad again and I am worried, I started taking the medicine again today to get rid of them, however they are scary.  I am wondering if vertigo can be this bad and repeated for fluid in the ears.  IT is 9:00 am and in an hour and a half I have had maybe 12 of these lasting under 10 seconds.  I am wondering if I should go back to my doctor and see about an MRI, is it possible the CAT scan missed something or can vertigo just be this bad for fluid in the ears?  (I am a 29 year old female, however I am severly obese which is why they checked for a stroke) I also have hypothyroidism and do not know if that is a factor.

If you have not had an MRI of the brain I think it is reasonable. Vertigo can be secondary to dysfunction within the inner ear, the vestibular nerve (nerve which serves balance), or central nervous system. A MRI will help to evaluate these areas, and exclude abnormalities. If the MRI is negative and you continue to have symptoms then you should probably see either a neurologist who specializes in dizziness (an otoneurologist), or and ear, nose, throat doctor (ENT or otolaryngologist). Good luck.
